The first white settlers were James McKee atMcKee's gap and Joseph Deneen at Deneen's Gap. They foundevidence that another settler had preceded them. In the forestthey found a crudely fashioned shelter made by a man whoobviously had no tools, not even an axe, to work with. It was ofwhat appeared to be African design and was probably made by arun away slave who moved on to parts unknown. James Mckee wassoon gathering all the pine knots he could find in the forestand in a mature forest they are not too plentiful as thehardwoods tend to crowd out the pine trees. On a large flatstone on the mountain he burned them and as the pitch collectedon the stone it ran into a groove that led to a spout at theedge. The hot pitch dripped into a barrel and thus he collectedwhat was once known as Naval Stores. He hauled the barrelsoverland to Philadelphia and found a market for the productthere. In the days of wooden hulled ships pitch was the best wayof keeping the cracks watertight. These trips East brought himin the vicinity of Path Valley, Franklin Co., Pa, where his wifeto be Nancy Robison was born. The Robisons moved to RobisonvilleBedford Co., Pa. in 1797. In his wedding day, June 22,1805, James waited at the top of the mountain with his horses. At home the bride had been delayed by some discussion with hermother who felt that her intended was too old for her. Next wehear of Nancy running up the mountain trail with mother Robisonin hot pursuit. Youth will be served and she didn't catch her.In later years Mother Robison reflected that she didn't reallywant to catch her. In Bedford, Pa. there is a record in DeedBook H Page 96 that in 1810 James McKee used all his landholdings including his home at the Gap in the mountains tosecure a loan of $152.71 for two years from George P. Barnhart. At this time a farm sometimes sold for $20.00. This was just onthe eve of the War of 1812 and just what signifcance this had onhis trip is not certain. It is known that James McKee was one ofthe few immigrants in his county to ever make a return trip tohis homeland. great Great Grandmother Nancy looked up onemorning from milking a cow and saw a man approaching in thedistance. From his walk she knew it was her "Jimmy" coming home.On the sea voyage he helped the crew repair a leak in the shipsaying "I have too much to loose not to help". James broughtback Marigold seeds and also the blue Iris from Ireland andshared them with his neighbors. In 1995 the stone chimney ofJames McKee's house beside the road can still be seen. The McKeeCemetery on Mr. Caveners farm in Union Twp. Fulton County Pa. isa little harder to find and a guide would be required if youhave never seen it. Zillah Mellott Garland told of hearing of 3brothers that came from Ireland. James McKee settled at McKee'sGap, another in Maryland and a third, David, near Pittsburgh,Pa.and is likely the founder of McKeesport according to theWestern Pa. Herespected the Biblical origin of the name but preferred hismiddle name and was known all his life as "Ed". His fathermarried late in life and one of Ed's teenage memories wasplowing the fields of the family farm at McKee's Gap, the summerafter his father died, with a horse that was older than he wasat 16 years of age. He recalled that his father John was buriedin a fine tailored suit. As a young man he would sometimes go tothe neighboring town of Hancock, Md. with some of the youngMcKibbin men. He would stay outside while they went into thetaverns for refreshment. In time their sister Jessie could seesome special merit in the young Ed McKee who was of soberhabits. Jessie McKibbin and Ed McKee were married on 04 Dec1895. It was life long love match and their home reflected thevalues they cherished. It was the Victorian age in Europe butthe American heartland shared similiar values. From farming itwas a natural step to being a huxter and buying the local farmproduce. Soon he built the new home and store building whichlater housed the Amaranth, Pa. Postoffice where he wasPostmaster for 44 years until his retirement due to age andwhere his son Ralph served as Postmaster after him. His motherin Law Ella Rebecca Eddowes McKibbin named the PostofficeAmaranth after a flower. One break in the continuity of EdMcKee's stay at Amaranth came when he took a year off in around1909 to manage another store in Marion, Pa. His young sons Ralphand Kenneth had to adjust to the schools there and they enduredsome teasing about the cut of their clothing which was a littledifferent from their new Eastern Pa. companions. Kennethrecalled that the store in Marion had ice cream cones in twosizes. There was a large 5 cent size and a small one cent size. The boys got to help out in their fathers store sometimes and ifa needy looking child ordered a one cent cone they tried to makesure it was packed to the fullest extent. Meanwhile back atAmaranth the house and store were in charge of Francis M. Diehlfirst cousin of Ed McKee on his mothers side. Francis M. Diehlwas a school teacher and also local Justice of The Peace. WhenFrancis M. Diehl left after his one year stay he left behind anold seal stamping machine for documents. Perhaps his term ofoffice had expired. The heavy black cast iron based device withthe long handle was in use as a doorstop around the house foryears. Francis Diehl left behind a drill chart which was used toteach children to tell time from the hands of a clock also. Thecountry store was a gathering place to meet ones neighbors andshare farming news, family news and hunting stories by the men. There were a few women hunters but they were the exception. Theauthor can recall in the late 1930's hearing men discuss themerits of the 40-40 Krag Rifle which could be had on the surplusmarket for $19.95 plus shipping costs. These were surplus riflesfrom the Spanish American War and the very same type carried upSan Juan Hill by Teddy Roosevelt's Rough Riders. Another of thetopics in 1930's was the proposed building of a PennsylvaniaTurnpike. As the newspapers presented the problem Governor Earlesaid the state didn't have the money and President Roosevelt wastelling the state to borrow it. Solomon Edward McKee kept storefor a total of 63 years before his retirement in 1960.

- Note: Ref: Brion UTZ BrionUtz@aol.com: "The earliest records of the UTZ family are found in the Province of Alsace, which is now a part of France but throughout history changed hands between French and German control. In the middle of the seventeenth century, at the close of the Thirty Years War, many Swiss-Germans left Switzerland for Germany, where there was more land available for farming than there were people to farm it. The Utz family may have been part of this migration, but no proof has been found for this. On September 28, 1733, Hans George Utz (age 50) and his son Hans Jacob (27), along with Jacob's young wife Marie Catherine (24) and Marie's Mother Barbara HOLLER (77), arrived at the ort of Philadelphia on board the Brigantine RICHARD AND ELIZABETH out of Rotterdam. Christopher Clymer was the Ship's Master. They made their way to Baltimore County, Maryland, where they originally settled."
